Beauty Secrets You May Not Know About SPF
Here are 5 FUN, SPF Beauty Secrets you may not know!
1. PAT your sunscreen on your face – don’t rub! When you apply it properly, sunscreen should form a thin layer on your skin. If you rub the sunscreen in, you could REMOVE it a little here and there, reducing the thickness of the film (and the sun protection it provides) in some areas.
2. Higher isn’t always better! SPF refers to the Sun Protection Factor and it measures how effective it is in blocking out UVB rays. I recommend a minimum of SPF of 15 to 30. Why not higher? Because SPF of 50+ does not significantly offer more sun protection than SPF 30 and the higher the number the heavier the product! I love weightless sunscreens!
- SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays
- SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays
- SPF 50 blocks 98% of UVB rays.
As you can see, doubling the SPF from 15 to 30 only increases your protection by 4%. Stick to an SPF of 15-30 and reapply every two hours if you are going to be outdoors.
3. The lips + eyes are the thinnest skin on the body! So make sure you are protecting AND moisturizing during the hot, summer months! I love this farm-to-face, tallow balm with a natural SPF 25. This is a multi-use balm that is fantastic for your eye area and lips – it is uber moisturizing and lightweight so you will WANT to use it!
4. Check your expiration dates! Every sunscreen has an expiration date – it may be the open tuna can with a number followed by the letter ‘M’, this would mean that many months is how good the product is after opening. The rule of thumb is a year – if opened, chuck your SPF after a year – this is your hint to clean out that beach bag from last summer!
5. How much to apply? You need a shot glass full for your body and 2 finger lengths worth for your face! If using spray sunscreen – always apply a cream or lotion first, then use the spray to touch up conveniently! I love the Supergoop Resetting Mist for Face – so easy to use!!
